Big Green Boys Overcome Pirates Great Start

February 8, 2021 by Adam Donaldson Leave a Comment

Continental Pirates
Continental High Head Coach Scott Keck had to like what he saw in the first quarter Friday night as the Pirates tangled with the AP poll Division IV #5 ranked Ottoville.  The host Big Green opened up the scoring with a basket and the Pirates came right back with a basket from Mitchell Coleman.  A 5 point run by the Big Green was stopped when Coleman made a basket.  Big Green 7-4.  A basket by the Big Green pushed their lead back to 5, 9-4.  The Pirates would turn up the D and string together baskets by Andrew Hoeffel, Coleman, and Bryce Recker and a 3 from Coleman for a 13-9 lead.  A free throw and a 3 by the Big Green would tie it all up at 13.  The Pirates would retake the lead with a Recker basket 15-13.  It looked like it would be a Pirate lead after one but a foul on a 3 point attempt with 3 seconds to go and 3 made free throw by the Big Green put the Big Green up for good 16-15.  Big Green 16-15 after 1.
The Big Green would put in the first basket of the second quarter make their lead 3, 18-15.  A basket by Coleman would cut that lead to 1, 18-17 Big Green.  A three by the Big Green was followed by a Recker basket for a 21-19 Big Green advantage.  A Big Green basket was followed by a Coleman 3 point play to make it a 1 point game 23-22.  It would be all Big Green the rest of the half as they put in the final 14 points of the half.  Big Green 37-22.
The third quarter would be all Big Green as the Pirates would get 8 points on 2 baskets by Gavin Huff, and single baskets by Coleman and Recker  while the Big Green would put in 27 points .  Big Green 64-30 after 3.
The fourth quarter would be low scoring with only 11 points scored by the two teams.  The Pirates would get a basket from Recker, a free throw form Konner Knipp Williams and a free throw and basket from Alex Sharrits.  Big Green 67, Pirates 35 final.
The Pirates were led by Mitchell Coleman with 16 points while Bryce Recker added in 10.  Gavin Huff scored 4, Alex Sharrits 3, Andrew Hoeffel 2, and Konner Knipp Williams 1.  The Pirates Coleman made the only 3 pointer for the Pirates while the Big Green made 5.
Continental falls to 6-12 (1-4 PCL).  The Pirates will host Kalida on Friday in another Putnam County League game.  Ottoville improves to 16-2 (6-0 PCL).  With the win the Big Green claims at least a part of the PCL title.
Mitchell Coleman has now scored 1187 in his Pirate career standing 7th all time on the Continental Scoring list.  Coleman is now 28th on the Putnam County Boys Career scoring list surpassing former Pirate Coach Eric Maag.
