In the Putnam County League Boys Soccer game between Continental and Ottoville in September, Ottoville took home the win 2-0 so all those at Kalida on Wednesday night for the OHSAA Division III Kalida District Semifinal were expecting a close hard fought game were not disappointed. Continental controlled the ball in the first half and hit pay dirt at 15:50 left in the half when Sophomore Wyatt Davis put in a shot to make it 1-0 Pirates. That would be all the scoring in the first half. Pirates 1, Big Green 0 after 1. The Big Green came out fired up in the second half and put in a tying goal just 3 minutes into the half for a 1-1 tie. A hard fought second half did not result in any more goals being scored for a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation.
The Pirates came out in the first overtime and again dominated the ball but did not score so it was still 1-1 after 95 minutes of action. The second overtime saw both team trying to put in the sudden death goal but the defenders played strong for a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of soccer. The game went into a shootout where 5 players from each team attempt penalty kicks with whichever team has more wins (if they are tied after this round more penalty kicks are taken). Both teams missed the first two kicks with Pirates first shot going over the goal while the second shot was stopped by the Big Green goalie. The Big Green had put in the first goal in the shootout to take a 1-0 lead. Another Pirate shot would go high to make it 1-0 Big Green after 3 kicks. The Big Green would put the Pirates in a must make position when the opened the 4th round with goal to take a 2-0 lead with the Pirates having only 2 more attempts. Sophomore Drew Hoeffel would take the Pirates #4 kick and beat the Big Green Goalie to stave off elimination and make it 2-1 with each team having one more shot. The Big Green would not finish the deal with their fifth shot when it hit the post. The Pirates final shot would be stopped by the Big Green Goalie for the 2-1 shootout win by the Big Green.
Continental finished the season at 11-6-1 while the Big Green improved to 16-1-1. Ottoville played Kalida on Saturday and were defeated a second time this season by 1-0 in the District Finals. Kalida will take on Ottawa Hills on Wednesday at 5:30 at Findlay in a Regional Semifinal.
