The regular monthly meeting for the Continental School Board was held at 7:00pm. on September 18, 2014 in the administrative office. President Dean Bidlack called the meeting to order.
Mr. Brian Gerdeman, Elementary Principal, reported:
•Students in Grades K-3 will be taking the Dibels test on Monday, September 22nd. This will help us identify any students who may need help with their reading skills and satisfies the requirement for the Third Grade Reading Guarantee diagnostic to be administered by September 30th.
•Kindergarten teachers have started to administer the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment to all kindergarten students. Students are assessed on language and literacy as well as math and science.
•Third grade students will be taking the OAA Reading Assessment on Wednesday, October 8th. Students must get a minimum score of 394 on the test to meet the requirements of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee.
•Midterms will be coming out on Friday, September 26th for the first nine weeks.
•There will be a two-hour early dismissal on Friday, September 26th. School will dismiss at 1:00 p.m.
Mr. Tim Eding, JH/HS Dean of Students, reported:
•The junior high fundraiser ended today. Students had the opportunity to sell cookie dough and magazines to win prizes and possibly a trip to Kalahari.
•1st quarter midterm is Friday, September 26th. We will mail home interim reports for all 7-12 grade students earning D’s or F’s.
•Early dismissal for staff in-service is scheduled for Friday, September 26th. Students will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m.
•Fall tournament draws will be held on Sunday, October 5th at the District site; the higher-seeded team will host the sectional tournament games (semifinal and final).
•Approved the following appropriation changes:
Decrease Fund 599 (Other Federal Grants)$2,323.00
Decrease Fund 587 (Title VI-B Preschool)$438.84
•Approved the advance from the General Fund (001) to the Cafeteria Fund (006) for $6,524.39.
•Approved the following donations:
•$1000.00 from Mike Walls to the Walls Scholarship Fund
•$ 100.00 from Mike and Pam Jones to the Band Fund (Percussion Mallets)
•$ 50.00 from Parents of Pirates to the Elementary Library for book in memory of Drew Altenburger
•Approved the annual in-state tuition rate of $3,700.91 for FY 2015.
•Approved the 5-Year Depository Agreement with First Federal Bank.
Mr. Mengerink gave the transportation report and discussed the new bus garage.
•There will be an upcoming meeting regarding Demand Response for peak electric usage days.
•We were informed on Monday that we would likely be receiving a $9000 rebate on workers comp premiums.
•Reviewed Report Card data and Third Grade Reading Guarantee.
•Heard the Vantage Career Center report from board member Ron Bradford.
•Accepted the following teacher retirement resignations, effective June 1, 2015. The Board thanked these teachers for their commitment and years of service to the students and administration at Continental School and wished them the best in any future endeavors.
