Host Columbus Grove Boys Basketball came into the Putnam County League game on Saturday undefeated and ranked 2nd in the latest AP Division IV poll. Their undefeated record stayed in tact with a win over Continental. It was Continental that held the early lead though as the Pirates put up the first points of the game when Reed Warnement hit a basket. The teams would exchange baskets to make it 7-4 Bulldogs when Trevor Brecht would hit for the Pirates. A pair of baskets by the Pirates (Brecht and Gavin Huff) would make it 8-7 Pirates. That would be all the scoring for the Pirates in the first as the Bulldogs would take the lead for good when they scored the final 5 points of the quarter. Bulldogs 12, Pirates 8 after 1.
The Bulldogs would open up the second quarter by hitting a pair of baskets and a pair of 3s before the Pirates would get on the board via a pair of free throws from Gannon Prowant. Bulldogs 22, Pirates 10. A 3 by the Bulldogs was followed up by a Huff basket Bulldogs 25-12. The Bulldogs would then put in the next 7 points to open up a 20 point lead 32-12 but that would be the last Bulldog points of the half. The Pirates would reduce the Bulldog lead by 4 as Mitchell Coleman and Brecht would put in baskets. Bulldogs 32, Pirates 16 at half.
The Pirates would start the third quarter scoring with a Coleman 3 to cut the Bulldog lead to 13 32-19. A 3 by the Bulldogs was followed by pair of Pirate baskets 1 each by Huff and Warnement. Bulldogs 35-23. A 5 point run by the Bulldogs was matched by the Pirates when Warnement hit a basket and Coleman converted a 3 point play. Bulldogs 40, Pirates 28. A 3 by the Bulldogs pushed their lead back to 15 but the Pirates came right back with the next 4 points thanks to baskets by Warnement and Coleman. Bulldogs 43-32. That would finish the Pirates scoring in the third while the Bulldogs would score the last 3 points of the quarter. Bulldogs 46, Pirates 32 after 3.
It was all Bulldogs in the fourth as the Pirates were not able to cut into the Bulldogs lead. The Bulldogs outscored the Pirates 26-15 in the final quarter for a 72-47 Bulldog verdict.
The Pirates were lead in scoring by Mitchell Coleman with 15 points and Gavin Huff and Reed Warnement 10 each. Trevor Brecht had 6 points, Bryce Recker 4 and Gannon Prowant 2. Continental had two 3-pointers from Coleman while the Bulldogs put in 11. Continental was 5/8 from the line.
