A short handed Pirate squad was out-manned in each quarter by the Miller City boys team in a Friday night Putnam County League Basketball encounter. Two of the Pirates 8 man rotation were on the injured/not dressed list at the start of the game. The Pirates did take an early lead as Mitchell Coleman put in the games first basket for a Pirate 2-0 lead. The Pirates followed up a Wildcat basket with a Bryce Recker basket to make it 4-2 Pirates. The Wildcats would take the lead for good when they would put up the next 13 points on six 2s and one 3 for a 15-4 Wildcat lead. The Pirates would get a basket and 3 from Coleman to finish out the quarter’s scoring. Wildcats 15,Pirates 9 after 1.
The second quarter started with the two teams exchanging baskets with Coleman hitting for the Pirates 17-11 Wildcats. Three more baskets by the Wildcats would extend their lead to 12, 23-11. The Pirates would get a 3 and a basket from Alex Sharrits to cut the deficit to 7, 23-16 Wildcats. The Wildcats would finish the half by scoring 10 of the last 11 points while the Pirates Noah Becher would make the only made free throw of the half for a 33-17 Wildcat lead at half.
The Pirates would open the second half with a pair of Gavin Huff baskets to make it a 12 point Wildcat lead Wildcats 33, Pirates 21. The Wildcats would match the Pirate 4 with a pair of made free throws and a basket to make it 37-21. A Recker basket would be followed by a pair of Wildcat baskets and a 3 to now make it a 21 point game Wildcats 44-23. Baskets by Huff and Coleman would finish up the Pirates 3rd quarter scoring at 27 while the Wildcats finished up at 27 via a basket and a made free throw. Wildcats 47, Pirates 27 after 3.
At the start of the fourth quarter the Pirates would cut into the Wildcat lead by 1 when Coleman hit a 3 after a Wildcat basket to make it Wildcats 49, Pirates 30 but that would be the closest the Pirates would get as the Wildcats would add on 5 more field goals while the Pirates would put in 7 more points from a pair of Coleman baskets, a Reed Warnement basket and a made free throw from Sharrits. Wildcats 59, Pirates 37 final.
Mitchell Coleman led the Pirates with 18 points while Alex Sharrits and Gavin Huff put in 6. Bryce Recker had 4 points, Reed Warnement 2 and Noah Becher 1. The Pirates made three 3 point shots with Coleman hitting 2 and Sharrits 1. The Wildcats made four 3-pointers. Continental was 2-6 from the line while Miller City was 2-7.
Continental falls to 3-10 (0-2 PCL). Miller City improves to 6-4 (2-1 PCL) Continental took the Junior Varsity game 34-30.
Trevor Brecht and Andrew Hoeffel did not dress for the Pirates on Friday night.
