Continental resident, Don Smith, has received notice from Ohio Governor John Kasich that he has been selected for induction into the Ohio Senior Citizen Hall of Fame. Don was nominated by Mary Beth Alberti of the Diabetes Youth Services. What began as a friendly wager, Don’s doctor said he would give him $100 if he swam 100 laps, has turned into Don swimming 300 laps each year on his birthday to raise fund for DYS. 2013 was Don’s nineth year of fundraising for DYS and he raised $20,000 for a grand total of over $100,000. Don says these funds are used to educate diabetic children on how to cope with the daily obstacles of having diabetes. Don is also very proud of the fact that with these funds, no child is turned away from DYS’s summer camp program.
Since 1977 over 350 individuals over the age of sixty have been inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. Don will join Gov. Kasich and the other 2013 inductees at a special awards ceremony at the Ohio Statehouse on May 24th. Go to http://aging.ohio.gov/news/halloffame/ for Don’s complete profile.
