Saturday night was a busy night at the Cove. There was a white-out to support the Hats for Hope effort. Over $1500 was raised to support this organization. The homecoming king (Page Thomas) and Queen (Alicia Dawson) were crowned. Amelia Weller sang the National Anthem. And there was the Putnam County League matchup between the Pirates and the Columbus Grove Bulldogs.
Lucky number 7. The homecoming game was decided by a trio of Pirate runs that were multiples of 7. In the first quarter the Pirates had a 17 point run then early in the second half they had a 7 point run and then another 7 point run at the start of the fourth.
The game started out all Bulldog as Grove scored the first 4 points and 8 of the first 10. The Pirates D then forced the Bulldogs into a number of turnovers as the Pirates went on a 14 point run to take a 16-8 lead midway through the first. The teams then traded baskets for a Pirate 18-13 lead at the end of one. Grove opened up the second quarter by scoring 7 of the first 9 points to tie the game at 20. The teams traded points the rest of the quarter and had a Bulldog lead 27-26 at half. The Pirates came out of the half break quick as Grove made the first 3 then the Pirates scored the next 7 for a Pirate 33-30 midway through the third. Grove outscored the Pirates 9-4 to lead at the end of three 39-37. The Pirates scored the first 7 points in the fourth to take a 44-39 lead and then hit 11 of 14 from the line for the 57-54 final.
Continental improves to 4-11 (2-2 in the PCL) while Columbus Grove moves to 11-5 (2-3 in the PCL). Columbus Grove won the Junior Varsity game 51-29.
The Pirates hit the hard court on Friday with a Putnam County League matchup at Ottoville.
