Today is Wednesday and there was no News Review in my mailbox when I got home. Like many of you, on Wednesdays I would get the mail out of the mailbox and sit in my car to catch up on the local scene in the News Review before I even went in the house (that way I got to read the paper first!). The last issue was delivered on October 30, 2013 – last week. It had the regular local news – the upcoming Veterans Day Program at the school, this week’s school lunch menu, the dinner on the first Wednesday at Christ United, and all the other usual news that happens around town.
The final issue also had many thank you’s and memories. Nyle and Helen’s daughters – Susan, Pat, and Judy each had a column about growing up around the News Review. Current employees – Susan, Caroline, and Jane shared their memories of working on the local paper – the whole crew going for morning break at Charlie Bill’s and afternoon break at the Peg Leg. The correspondents from North Creek, Dupont, Mt. Pleasant, and all the other little burgs who years ago reported who had hosted club last week, who ate Sunday dinner at someone’s home, who visited for an afternoon – the forerunner of Facebook, no doubt.
Like so many of you, I will sure miss that paper. I’ve read it weekly since I was able to read and that’s a long time! Nyle and Helen have left big shoes to fill; Adam and I have our work cut out for us. We wish Nyle and Helen the best in their retirement and thank them sincerely for their dedication to our community.
