Friday saw a close game through 3 quarters when Miller City hosted Continental High in boys Putnam County League action. A large crowd filled the gym as the Wildcats put up the first 2 point of the game. Gavin Huff made a 2 to make it a 2 all game. The Wildcats would retake the lead with a basket only to see the Pirates Huff put the Pirates in the lead with a 5 point run when he would make a basket and convert a 3 point play. Pirates 7-4. A free throw by the Wildcats was followed by a Pirate basket by Andrew Hoeffel Pirates 9-5. That would be it for points for the Pirates as Miller City would score the final 7 points of the quarter to take a 12-9 lead. The game was stopped with 1.4 second left in the first to present the game ball to Wildcat guard Austin Ruhe as he put in a lay up for his 1000th point.
The second quarter had the Pirates go into the lead when they put in the first 7 points of the quarter. Konnor Knipp Williams opened up the quarter scoring with a basket while Huff finished off the run making a 2 and a 3. Pirates 16-12. The Wildcats would put in the next 4 points to tie the score at 16. The Pirates would gain their last lead of the game when Knipp Williams would make a basket Pirates 18-16. The Wildcats would hit a 3 and a 2 to put them up 21-18. Huff would finish up the half scoring with a basket to make it 21-20 Wildcats at half. Huff put in a game leading 14 points in the first half.
The second half and the game would be decided by Pirate offensive struggles as they could not get shots to fall. The Wildcats opened the scoring by hitting a 3 to take a 4 point lead 24-20. The Pirates would would put in the next 4 points on free throws from Wyatt Davis and Knipp Williams to finish of the third scoring Wildcats 25-28. The fourth quarter saw Wildcat 1000 point scorer Ruhe finish off the Pirates by going 6-6 from the line and hitting a 2 baskets while the only offense for the Pirates was a Knipp Williams basket. Wildcats 40-27 final.
Gavin Huff led the Pirates with 14 points while Konnor Knipp Williams put in 9. Andrew Hoeffel and Wyatt Davis both had 2 points. Huff hit the only 3 for the Pirates while the Wildcats made 2.
Continental falls to 3-7 (0-2 PCL) and will host Ayersville on Saturday. Miller City improves to 7-5 (2-1 PCL). Miller City took the exciting Junior Varsity game 30-29.
