Lately the eNews website has ran into issues that have been plaguing many readers. The most common issue experienced is the, “Sorry, that didn’t work. Please try again or come back later” error when trying to access a part of our site. If you’ve had trouble accessing recent news articles, we sincerely apologize.
These errors are due, in part, to a recent change made last week to make our site more secure. You may recognize our site is now served over a valid SSL Certificate. This is evident by the lock icon and the https:// in our address bar. This is a good change for us (and you) as it means that your browser’s communication to our web server is now encrypted so if someone on the dark web tried to intercept the data sent from our server to your browser, it cannot be read or tampered with. While this is an extremely good thing, our current site programming wasn’t able to handle it.
This leads to the second part of the error issue, which is the world of web is advancing and the current back-end programming of our eNews website just wasn’t made to be compatible with the new requirements of the web. These compatibility issues will come up every few years, and when they do, in order to fulfill our commitment to the community and continue providing you with current and relevant news affecting our area, we will address those issues by making technological updates or if necessary, creating a new website.
It is for those reasons that we are excited to announce that in the next few days we will go live with a new version of the Continental eNews website! This new website will be fully compatible with current web technology and allow us to upgrade the horse power running behind the site. Additionally, this new site will bring improvements to the user experience as it is designed to look amazing and both mobile devices and regular computers. And, for those readers viewing from a hi-definition device, we are incorporating Retina Display features for better high-def viewing.
Along with new features that improve the site’s security, speed and usability, we are also incorporating some new features. An example is we will be offering Continental Pirate gear for sale through a secure online shopping feature on a trial basis. Our thought is to eventually utilize this online shopping feature to offer local items for sale to help boost the local marketplace. So, if you produce or sell a local product or service and would like to have that product or service listed on our secure eCommerce platform, please contact us so that we can discuss this with you further.
We are excited to bring our new eNews website live in the next couple of days as it will bring an end to our current troubles and usher in the future of the Continental eNews. With anything new, though, we are sure that there will be some additional bugs that will need to be worked out with the new site as well.
It has been our pleasure to serve the community over the past 5 years, and we look forward to continuing to serve you with the most accurate and relevant local news for years to come.
