On Saturday, May 7th, the current Continental EMS members honored those EMTs who have served our community over the last 43 years. In 1973, the county initiated a program to have trained emergency medical volunteers in each community. Most of them were local firemen and some of their wives who signed up for that first class. We don’t have a full list as approximately 30 took that initial class but some of those first volunteers were: Larry & Dorothy Mansfield, Darryl Elkins, Sprout & Mary Williams, Bob & Pat Wollam, Vic Schwarzman, Jack Good, Carl Williams, Arnie Mansfield, Marly Rayle, and Bill Moeller. Many of you may remember that prior to the EMS service, Bill Walker of Walker Funeral Home was the local means of getting transported to the hospital. Continental’s first Emergency Medical Service supplied our community with four rotating squads, with four EMTs per squad.
The evening was more of a family reunion – the hours of training, the middle of the night runs, through joys and sorrows, this group bonded into more than just co-workers. Although many of them no longer serve as EMTs, it was fitting to honor their time and service given to our community. Those present received a certificate, those no longer with us were remembered, and special mention was given to Carl Williams, the only fireman/EMT who died while on duty. The Continental Volunteer Firemen were also thanked for their years of aid to the EMTs – whenever help is needed, they always respond!
There are currently eight EMTs serving our community. If you are interested in becoming an EMT, contact the Putnam County Office of Public Safety at 419-538-7315. A special thank you to the Legion Auxiliary who graciously prepared and donated the meal!
