If the overtime game on Friday was not long enough, the Pirates and Antwerp tried to make the basketball fans happy by going four overtimes this time. On Saturday the game started pretty one sided as visiting Antwerp opened up the game by scoring the first 5 points before Wade Stauffer made a pair of free throws. It was more Archers the rest of the quarter as they opened up a 10 point lead after one– 17-7. In the second Antwerp expanded the lead to 12 until the Pirates had an 8 point run (Caleb Olds 3 pointer, Wade Stauffer 3 pointer, and Jacob Williamson 2) to pull within eight at 23-19. Antwerp scored the last point of half to lead 24-19. The third quarter saw the two teams basically trade baskets back and forth with the Pirates closing the margin by 1, 33-29 Archers after 3. The Pirates scored the first 5 points of the fourth (Tyler Brecht 3 and Williams 2) to take their first lead of the game 34-33. The game was then tied twice at 36 and 39. Antwerp then scored 5 of the next 7 points to lead 44 –41. The Pirates hit a three by Williams to tie it at 44.
Overtime 1: Caleb Olds opened up the scoring in overtime with a basket that was matched by a pair of free throws by Archer Sam Williamson to make it 46-46 after 1 overtime.
Overtime 2: Trevor Williams hit a three to make it 49-46 only to have the Archers make a basket and free throw for a 49 all tie.
Overtime 3: The Archers continued the scoring run as they scored the first 5 points of the third overtime to make it 54-49. The Pirates combined some defensive stops, clutch free throw shooting, to offset the Archers shooting 10-11 from the line to make it 60-63 with 3.7 second left. The Pirates inbounded the ball at the far baseline and Williamson dribbled through the defense to hit a midcourt 3 as time expired. 63-63. Trevor Williamson was 6-6 from the line in the third OT.
Overtime 4: The Archers opened up scoring the first four points of the quarter. Although the Pirates battled back they could not overcome 13-16 from the line by the Archers. Final score Antwerp 79 Continental 72.
Leading the scoring for the Pirates was Trevor Williamson with 19 ( three 3-pointers and 6-6 from the free throw line in the 3rd OT). Caleb Olds had 18 points (3 pointers) while Wade Stauffer had 12 (1 3 pointer). Jacob Williams had a stellar game as he put 17 points in the basket and also led both the game in rebounds unofficially with 12. Rounding out the scoring was Tyler Brecht with 5 (1 3 pointer) and Dean Krendl with 2.
Archer Sam Williamson showed that he is not only a stellar runner (2nd in the 2015 Division OHSAA Division III Cross Country State Runner up) he led the Archers with 33 points hitting 16-16 from the free throw line in the overtime periods.
The Pirates fall to 2-4 and next travel to the Vatican (Delphos St. Johns) on Tuesday. The Archers are now 2-3.
