Bert Taylor Showman, 95, of Liberty Center, OH passed away Monday September 21, 2015 at the Lutheran Home in Napoleon. Bert was born on February 13, 1920 in Liberty Center to the late Abbie and Cloyce Showman. Besides his parents, Bert is preceded in death by his loving wife: Edith Alban Showman whom Bert married on December 11, 1943 and Edith passed away on April 2, 2002. Bert is also preceded in death by his granddaughter; brothers: John Showman, Austin Showman; sister: Caroline Matthews.
Surviving Bert is his daughter: Jane (Michael) Weller of Continental, OH; sons: Ray (Carol) Showman of McArthur, OH, Ralph (Rebecca) Showman of Dickinson, TX; 5 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren.
Bert graduated in 1942 from Ohio State University with his bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII on December 9, 1943 where he spent 1.5 years on Saipan with the B29’s. He was an Armament Officer until he was honorably discharged in April 1946 as a Captain. In 1973, Bert received his master’s degree. He was a 4th generation dairy farmer to own and farm the land that is now Mary Jane Thurston Park on Route 24. He taught at Northwest Technical College from 1969 until his retirement in 1980.
Bert was a member of the Liberty Center United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of the trustees and a lay leader, he was also a member of Liberty Center American Legion, Liberty Center Elevator, and Henry County Farmers Mutual Insurance Company where he was a past president.
Visitation will be Wednesday, September 23, 2015 from 3:00 – 5:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. in the Wright-Habegger Funeral Home, 302 E. Maple St., Liberty Center, Ohio 43532. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 10:00 AM also at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Young Cemetery.
