
SOFTBALL:
It took three tries but Continental opened up the home portion of the 2021 Softball season on Tuesday against Putnam County League rival Leipsic. Defensive struggles by the Pirates made a major impact in the game as the Vikings opened up the game with 9 runs in the first three innings of which only 3 were earned. The Vikings scored 4 in the first and 3 in the second to take a 7-0 lead. The Pirates would get a single run in the bottom of the second to make it 7-1. A 2 spot by the Vikings and a Pirates scoreless fourth made it 9-1 Vikings. The Vikings would add 4 to take a 12 run lead into the bottom of the fifth. The Pirates would keep the game going by plating 3 in the bottom of the 5th to make it 13-4 Vikings. The Vikings would end the game with a run in the 5th and holding the Pirates scoreless for the 14-4 win.
Maddie Burke had a big day at the plate for the Pirates hitting a home run and a double with an RBI. The homer by Burke is the first over the fence variety at the current field. Catelyn Etter had a pair of singles for the Pirates. Overall the Pirates had 8 hits. Burke, Etter, Olivia Logan, and Alli Scott all drove in a run. Burke scored twice while Logan and Searfoss both scored once. Scott, Logan, Searfoss, and Destiny Pier all had 1 hit.
Alli Scott was the pitcher of record as she went 2.2 inning giving up 9 runs (3 earned), 5 hits and 3 strikeouts. Tygre Troyer pitched in relief going 3.1 innings giving up 5 runs, 3 hits and 5 strikeouts.
Continental is now 0-3 (0-1 PCL) and will host Lincolnview on Friday. Leipsic is 6-1 (1-0 PCL).
BASEBALL:
Tuesday both Continental and Leipsic High opened up their 2021 Putnam County League schedule with a game at Continental. It was all Vikings as the emerged 13-0 winner in a 5 inning outing.
Continental falls to 0-4 (0-1 PCL) and will host Lincolnview in a nonleague game on Friday. Leipsic is 5-2 (1-0 PCL).
