In a thrilling season opener filled with offensive fireworks, the Continental B-League showcased their offensive power in a tight battle against the Columbus Grove Red. Despite ultimately falling short by a score of 11-10, the Continental B-League displayed impressive resilience and a never-say-die attitude throughout the game.
Continental B-League Explodes Out of the Gate
The Continental B-League wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, plating four runs in the top of the first inning. Ashton Donaldson kicked off the scoring with a single on the very first pitch of the game. After a strikeout, Asher Deken was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Reid Brown then followed with a line-drive single, loading the bases for Nolan Wagner. Wagner delivered a clutch single, scoring Donaldson for the game’s first run.
The hits kept coming for the Continental B-League as Linden Bassinger singled home Deken. Braden Cole then launched a double, scoring both Brown and Wagner to extend the lead to 4-0.
Columbus Grove Red Responds in Kind
The Columbus Grove Red answered back in the bottom of the first inning. After a leadoff single by Tyson, a wild pitch and a stolen base put him in scoring position. Cameron then lined a single to right field, plating Tyson to get the Red on the board. The Red continued to put pressure on Continental B-League starter Lucas Gyetvai with another stolen base and a single by Mason. However, Gyetvai managed to escape the jam with a strikeout to end the inning.
Continental B-League Stays Hot in the Second
The Continental B-League continued their offensive surge in the top of the second inning. Ashton Donaldson stayed hot, leading off with a double to right field. Fynn Slattman followed with a single, putting runners on first and third. Asher Deken then singled, loading the bases. Although Reid Brown struck out, Nolan Wagner delivered another clutch hit, a fly ball to center field, scoring Donaldson. Unfortunately, the Continental B-League couldn’t capitalize further as Linden Bassinger struck out swinging against the Columbus Grove Red pitcher.
Columbus Grove Red Responds with Big Third Inning
The bottom of the third inning saw Columbus Grove Red explode for six runs, taking control of the game. They capitalized on walks to Drake and Tanner before stringing together a series of hits, including a double by Mason and a Jaiden double that cleared the bases. Lucas Gyetvai battled through the inning but ultimately allowed six runs before the Continental B-League could record an out.
Continental B-League Rallies in the Later Innings
Despite falling behind by a significant margin, the Continental B-League showed their resilience by battling back in the top of the fifth inning. They tied the game again on a double by Ashton Donaldson, followed by a walk and a single. Notably, this marked Donaldson’s fifth hit of the game, a perfect performance at the plate.
A Heartbreaking Loss, But a Promising Start
In the bottom of the sixth inning, with the score tied 10-10, Columbus Grove Red mounted a scoring threat and brought home the win with a double scoring one, making the final a Pirate loss 10-11.
Despite the heartbreaking ending, the Continental B-League can take away many positives from their season opener. They displayed a potent offense, collecting 17 hits and battling back from deficits throughout the game. Notably, Ashton Donaldson went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, while Nolan Wagner led the team with 4 RBIs.
Both teams also showcased strong pitching performances.
Lucas Gyetvai pitched admirably for three innings facing 24 batters while allowing 11 hits, 10 runs, 5 walks and 5 strikeouts. Nolan Wagner then came in relief facing 15 batters while allowing 3 hits, 2 runs, 6 walks and 4 strikeouts.
While the loss stings, the Continental B-League showed a lot of promise in their first game of the season. This exciting back-and-forth contest is a great sign of what’s to come for both teams as the season progresses.
