Continental Board of Education Meeting, June 19, 2019

The regular meeting for the Continental School Board was held at 5:30 p.m. on June 19, 2019 in the administrative office. The meeting was called to order by the president Dean Bidlack.

Hearing of the Public: Brian Donaldson, from the Blue and Gold Club discussed tickets for an upcoming reverse raffle.

Mrs. Tracy Potts, Elementary Report:
•Chromebooks for the elementary are in. We have enough Chromebooks to be one-to-one for grades 1-6.
•The elementary schedule is complete. We will continue to do our reading enrichment program for grades K-2 every morning. Data shows that this program is beneficial.
•Current enrollment is 267 students. Mobility for 18-19: 33 new students; 20 withdrawn. Retentions: Four Kindergartners; One Fifth Grader.
•Kindergarten enrollment for 19-20 is 44 students (10 of those students will participate in Kinderstart).
•Third grade reading results are in and all students met the Third Grade Reading Guarantee by passing the Air test or qualified to be exempt.
•Air Testing results for the spring are in, excluding students who took paper/pencil tests. The overall results were outstanding and the teachers should be commended for their hard work.
•The elementary students donated $2,005 to Relay for Life cancer research and $700 to CAP.
Mr. Tim Eding, JH/HS Report:
•The commencement ceremony went well. Thank you to the student speakers, Pastor Heilshorn, Mr. Kissell, Mrs. Swonger, Mrs. Bradford, and members of the Board of Education for your efforts in making the event memorable for the graduates.
•The school year ended on a positive note. Thank you to the students and teachers for working hard though the end of the year. •Congratulations to Katie Keller on her 5th place finish at the state track meet in the 300-meter hurdles.
•There are three students currently taking summer school classes through the ESC to recover credits that they missed during the school year. Along with the ESC, both Mrs. McIntyre and I are monitoring and communicating with families through the end of summer school to hopefully ensure all students finish on time and earn their credits.
•The staff will be working over the summer continuing the development of a positive behavior program for all students in grades 7-12.
•Updates were given on preliminary spring testing.

Treasurer’s Report:
Treasurer Katelyn Adams updated the Board on the District’s financial report, including investments, cash reconciliations, and Board spending plan.
The Board:
•Approved the following donations:
•$300 from the Blue and Gold Club to the Girls Soccer Fund
•$111 from Chip Carter to the Industrial Arts Fund
•Approved a resolution to participate in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program for school year 2019-2020.
•Established cafeteria prices for school year 2019-2020:
K-6 Lunch $2.50
7-12 Lunch $3.00
Ala Carte Plate Lunch $3.35
K-12 Reduced Lunch $ .40
Adult Lunch $3.75
K-12 Breakfast $1.75
K-12 Reduced Breakfast $ .30
•Approved the following appropriation changes:
Increase Establish and Increase 499 BWC School Safety and Security Grant $37,092.44
•Approved the following transfers:
General Fund (001) to the Building Maintenance Fund (001 9300), $115,000
General Fund (001) to Cafeteria (006), $20,000
OHSAA Tournament Account (022 9000) to General Fund (001), $478.53 General Fund (001) to Athletic Fund (300), $478.53
•Approved FY 2019 appropriation modifications to comply with Ohio Revised Budgetary Requirements
Fund 001 (General) Increase $135,478.53
Fund 006 (Cafeteria) Increase $20,000.00
Fund 022 (District Agency): Increased $478.53
•Approved FY 2020 permanent appropriations.
•Approved July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020 school insurances from SORSA (Schools of Ohio Risk Sharing Authority) for property, fleet, and liability with a total liability limit of $15,000,000 at a premium of $56,472. (Reduction of $1,436 over last year.)

Superintendent’s Report:
•The transportation report was heard.
•Ron Bradford gave the Vantage Career Center report.
The Board:
•Approved the elementary and junior high/high school student handbooks for 2019-2020.
•Established student workbook/lab fees. Elementary fees for K-6 will remain unchanged at $40.00. Junior high and high school fees will be posted on the school website.
•The following staff members were recognized on May 24, 2019 for their service at Continental Local School:
5-Year: Mary McClure, Colleen Siefker, Brian Stegbauer
10-Year: Cyndi Brown
15-Year: None
20-Year: Kelli Roney, Carol Sullivan
25-Year: Vicki Wagner

Perfect Attendance: Brian Badenhop, Brian Stegbauer, Steve Troyer, Kathy Schmiedebusch, Keith Schnipke
Starfish Award (Extra Mile): Tim Eding
•Employed Kelly Van Ham as a Kinderstart teacher, and issued her a one-year limited contract, pending proper certification and satisfactory FBI/BCI background checks, effective August 15, 2019 at the proper step and pay column, pending verification, for the 2019-2020 school year.
•Accepted the retirement resignation of Stephen Troyer, custodian, effective January 1, 2020. Steve has been employed at Continental School for the past 31 years and has been a great asset to the students and staff. We thank Steve for his years of service to Continental School and wish him the best in his retirement.
•Accepted the following supplemental resignations:

The meeting adjourned at 6:02 p.m. The next regular meeting will be held on July 16th at 5:30 p.m. in the administrative office.
