The regular meeting for the Continental School Board was held at 7:00 p.m. on March 15, 2016 in the administrative office. President Dean Bidlack called the meeting to order.
Mrs. Trac y Potts, Elementary Principal, reported:
– First graders took a field trip to the Valentine Theatre in Toledo to see Junie B. Jones
– The state department has reviewed our lunch program. Diana Ordway should be commended for the work she puts into providing a state approved program. The free/reduced lunch program was also audited.
– The show choir sang at several Putnam County nursing homes. I received a couple emails thanking the students for their performance. They also sang the National Anthem at the Walleye game. A video of their performance is posted on the school website.
– Eleven business owners attended the breakfast put on by the student council.
– The book fair family night was well attended. We raised enough money from the book fair to provide a book for every student.
– The county art festival was a big success. Congratulations to Mrs. Hopps and the elementary students on their artistic abilities.
– Mrs. Benton and Mrs. Schlegel went to an iReady presentation. The iReady program could potentially replace Accelerated Reader and STAR math and reading.
– Spring AIR testing will begin the week of April 11.
– The after school program recently had their bi-annual site visit.
Mr. Tim Eding, JH/HS Dean of Students, reported:
– Congratulations to all of the participants in the Putnam County arts festival that was held at Columbus Grove on March 6th. Our students received four of the 15 “Best of Show” ribbons. Receiving the awards were Leah Baker, Sydney Eickholt, Keagan Grime, and Hannah Troyer. A special “thank you” to Mr. Swonger and Mrs. Hopps for all of their hard work in making the arts festival a success.
– Friday is the end of the 3rd quarter grading period. Grade cards should be ready by the end of the next week.
– The spring musical called “High School Musical” will be presented on Friday, April 8th and Saturday, April 9th at 7:30 pm in the Casteel Auditorium.
– Mr. Eding and Mr. Mengerink will be traveling with two students to Columbus on Friday for the #GoldenMegaphone recognition from the OHSAA. The CHS “student section” is one of 6 finalists that are being honored at halftime of the 2 pm game.
Athletic Update:
– Thanked everyone that helps make basketball season possible for our students, including the coaches, ticket takers, clock operators, concession workers, bus drivers, custodians, and announcers. A special thank you to Dawn Mansfield for caring for and cleaning all of the JV and varsity uniforms.
– Spring sports have started – spring sports schedules are available on the website. Spring sports numbers are as follows: baseball – 20, softball – 18, HS track – 17 (12 boys, 5 girls), JH track – 23 (13 boys, 10 girls), dual sports athletes – 3 (2 are track primary and baseball secondary, 1 is track primary and softball secondary)
Treasurer’s Report: The Board approved:
– $151.00 donation from the Farmers’ Breakfast to the FFA Fund.
– $240.00 donation from the Vantage Clock Raffle to the Junior Class (to be used for Jr/Sr Prom).
– Flat Rock Education Center contract for special education services provided to our district at an estimated cost of $32,000.
– Return of advance from Cafeteria Fund (006) to the General Fund (001) for $1,478.78.

Superintendent’s Report:
– Informed the Board that performances of “High School Musical” will be held on Friday, April 8th and Saturday, April 9th at 7:30 p.m. in the Irene Wahl Casteel Auditorium, with a matinee performance on Thursday, April 7th at 12:30 p.m. The show is directed and choreographed by Ms. Nicole Baringer and student directors Garrett Recker and Leah Baker. Mr. Dan Swonger will serve as musical and pit director, Mrs. Pam Jones as piano accompanist, and the pit orchestra will feature CHS students and community members.
Mr. Mengerink gave the transportation report.
Reported the following:
– Shared the district report card with board members and compared it to last year. Also reminded board members of all of the changes to testing in the past year and that more changes were taking place this year.
– Presented a bill from Kahle & Verhoff for additional work that was done to the bus garage because the contractor believed an upgrade was needed to the plans. However, the work was done without a change order being approved by the board. The board approved payment of the materials/supplies and thanked the contractor for donating the labor for the upgrade. The project came in well under budget.
– Tax hearings were held today with the auditor’s office and the county CIC. All of the TIF agreements were renewed with the exception of the one for New Millenium. That agreement was unanimously terminated as they reported no employees or income generated in the facility last year.

The meeting is intended solely for the purpose of going into executive session for the purpose of discussing the employment of personnel and to interview for the superintendent’s vacancy.
