Continental Local Schools March BOE Meeting

​The regular monthly meeting for the Continental School Board was held at 7:00 p.m. on March 17, 2015 in the administrative office. President Dean Bidlack called the meeting to order. ​

Hearing of the Public:
​​Glenn Karhoff and Judy Schroeder representing the Putnam County Parents Against Common Core Standards addressed the Board.

Mr. Brian Gerdeman, Elementary Principal, reported:
•At this time, there are 33 students signed up for Kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year. These children will be going through Kindergarten screening on Friday, April 10th.
•Thank you to everyone that helped support the Elementary Scholastic Book Fair. The Book Fair brought in approximately $3,200 and the profits will be used to purchase books for the library and individual classrooms.
•Thursday, March 19th the elementary will be hosting an assembly performed by African acrobats. This program is being provided by the Parents of Pirates organization. We want to thank them for bringing this assembly to the school.
•March 23-27 will be Right to Read Week at the elementary and there will be several reading related activities taking place during the week. The Parents of Pirates have provided each family with a copy of the book “The Lemonade War”. This book will be read in the classrooms throughout the week.
•The fifth grade students will be participating in an energy fair next week in cooperation with the junior high students. Students will be learning about energy resources from the junior high students. Materials for the project were provided through a grant from AEP.

Mr. Tim Eding, JH/HS Dean of Students, reported:
•Congratulations to all of the participants in the Putnam County Arts Festival that was held at PGHS on Sunday. There were numerous students with artwork in the art show. Andi Krendl, Noah Emmons, Dean Krendl, and Melody Weaver represented Continental in the All-County Band, and Ross Etter, Page Thomas, and Gabrielle Ridgeway represented the school in the All-County Choir. A special “Thank You” to Mrs. Jenny Hopps and Ms. Allison Davis for their work in helping with the festival.
•Sophomores are taking OGT tests this week.
•Friday is the end of the 3rd grading period; grade cards should be released late next week.
•NHS will be traveling to Cincinnati on Tuesday.
•No School on Friday, April 3rd in observance of Good Friday.
•The spring musical “Annie” will be presented on Friday and Saturday, April 10th and 11th at 7:30pm in the Casteel Auditorium.
•The second round of PARCC testing will begin on April 13th

Athletic Update:
•Congratulations to all winter sports teams on successful seasons. Thank you to all the coaches, ticket takers, clock operators, scorekeepers, announcers, concession workers, custodians, bus drivers and everyone else that makes the winter sports season possible. A special “Thank You” to Mrs. Dawn Mansfield and her students for helping keep the JV and Varsity uniforms clean all season long.
•Practices for all spring sports have started; games/meets begin the last week of March and first week of April.
•I have received five applications for dual-sports participants for this spring; final roster numbers will be ready for the next meeting once eligibility from the 3rd quarter is finalized.

Treasurer’s Report:
The Board:
•Approved an advance of $1,595.83 from the General Fund (001) to the Cafeteria Fund (006).
•Approved a preliminary agreement with the Putnam County Educational Service Center for special education services for FY 2016.
•Approved the following donations:​
​​$ 65.50 Anonymous donation to FCCLA Fund
​$200.00 from 4th Masonic District Association to Continental FCCLA Fund
​$145.00 from Fire Pit Raffle Donation to FFA Fund.
​$145.00 from Fire Pit Raffle Donation to FCCLA Fund​
​New Kawasaki Power Tools valued at $2600, donated from Defiance TSC to FFA Fund.

•Approved a preliminary agreement with the Putnam County Educational Service Center for special education services for FY 2016.
​
Superintendent’s Report:
​•Transportation report was given.
​•Approved to advertise for new 72 and 78-passenger buses with possible trade-in.
​•Discussed change in how gym floors will be refinished during the summer.
​•Discussed possibility of resurfacing the track, and gave a rough estimate of $20,000-$25,000.

The Board:
•The high school musical “Annie” will have a matinee performance on Thursday, April 9th at 12:30 p.m. Evening performances will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 10th and April 11th at 7:30 p.m. in the Irene Wahl Casteel Auditorium. The show is directed by Ms. Allison Davis, Mrs. Chelsea Manon and student director Madison Mansfield. Ms. Nicole Baringer choreographed all large routines, Mrs. Mrs. Pam Jones has served as the piano accompanist, and the pit orchestra will feature local band directors as well as musicians from BGSU.
•Approved three-year articulation agreement between University of Northwestern Oho and Continental High School for Agribusiness Fundamentals class.
•Approved Memorandum of Understandings and/or Partnership Agreements between the Continental Local School and Rhodes State College, University of Toledo, Owens Community College, and Northwest State Community College for College Credit Plus courses.
•Approved resolution opposing the continued use of PARCC and AIR assessments and favor local control of education.
•Approved Brooke Tegenkamp and Allison Streicher as volunteer assistant softball coaches.
•Approved the following supplementals, pending proper certification and satisfactory background checks, if applicable, for the 2015-2016 school year:
​Allison Streicher, Varsity Volleyball
​Jordan Streicher, JV Volleyball
​Brian Stegbauer, Varsity Boys Soccer
​Austin Prowant, JV Boys Soccer (if numbers warrant)
​Hannah Davis, JV Girls Soccer (if numbers warrant)
​Toby Bidlack, Girls Soccer
​•Accepted Tracy Potts’ resignation as co-cheerleading advisor.
​•Approved the revised job description for technology coordinator.

​The meeting adjourned at 8:02 p.m. The next regular board meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 22nd at 7:00 p.m. in the administrative office.
