It Happened Last Night…
The regular monthly meeting for the Continental School Board was held at 7:30 p.m. on May 20, 2014 in the administrative office. President Dean Bidlack called the meeting to order.
Mr. Brian Gerdeman, Elementary Principal, reported:
•Student testing is complete and all tests have been returned to the testing company for grading. Two students who did not pass the fall Third Grade Reading test are being monitored to meet the Third Grade Guarantee. Sixth grade students have also had a chance to take the field test for the new Math PARCC Assessments. Students in Grades K-3 have also taken the state diagnostic test to meet state requirements.
•Field Day is Wednesday, May 28th from 8:45-11:30.
•Grade Six Renaissance Fair is May 28th at 1:30 p.m.
•Relay for Life Day will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 29th
•Elementary Awards Day is Friday, May 30th at 8:45 for Kindergarten; 10:00 a.m. for grades 1-3; and 11:00 a.m. for grades 4-6.
•Grade Cards go home on Friday, May 30th.
•Summer School is scheduled for August 4th-15th from 8:30-11:30 a.m.
Mr. Tim Eding, JH/HS Dean of Students, reported:
•Vantage Senior Awards were presented on May 20th. Continental students Evan Prowant, Cailah Rickard, and Clirissa McMonigal received “Awards of Merits” as the top seniors in their respective programs.
•Senior Awards were presented last Tuesday. Many scholarships and awards were handed out to seniors and many underclassmen received awards for various activities they participated in this school year.
•OGT Results: Writing 34/36 (94.4% Passage); Reading 34/36 (94.4% Passage); Math 34/36 (94.4% Passage); Social Studies 34/36 (94.4% Passage); and Science 32/36 (88.8% Passage).
•Senior Projects went well. All Seniors Passed!
•JH/HS Exam Schedule for Next Week: Thursday, Periods 5-8; Friday, Periods 1-4. Friday, May 30th is the last day for students.
•Teacher Inservice/Workday is June 2nd and 3rd.
•Graduation will be held on Sunday, May 25th at 2:30 p.m. in the gymnasium. Doors will open at 1:45 p.m.
Athletic Updates:
•Spring Sports Awards were handed out Monday, May 19th.
•District Softball and Track Updates.
•Update on sports physicals for 2014-2015 school year.
Treasurer’s Report:
The Board:
•Approved the five-year forecast.
•Approved advance from the General Fund to the Cafeteria Fund for $463.64.
•Approved the Depository Agreements with The Fort Jennings State Bank and The Union Bank Company for five years each.
•Approved the following FY 2014 appropriation modifications:
Increase Fund 013 – Recreation$ 135.65
Decrease Fund 451 – Data Communication$1800.00
Decrease Fund 506 – Resident Educators$ 700.00
Increase Fund 590 – Title II-A$ .01
•Approved the transfer of $65,000 from the General Fund (001-0000) to the General Fund Capital and Maintenance Reserve Setaside Fund (001-9300).
•Approved the NWOET contract renewal for 2014-2015 ($1.65 x 480 ADM = $792.00).
•Approved return of advance of $8,404.59 from the Recreation “Swimming Pool” Fund (013) to the General Fund. ($3,301.58 remains to be returned to the General Fund.)
•Approved the following donations:
$250 from Blue and Gold Club to Athletic Fund to Purchase 2014-2015 Athletic Passes
$2910 from Blue and Gold Club to Athletic Dept for Stim Machine
$500 from Medical Mutual of Ohio to Medical Mutual Scholarship Fund
$187 from Art Show Donations to the Art Fund
“Korea Reborn, A Grateful Nation” Book Donation from Veterans of Foreign Wars to the Continental School Library.
•Approve membership to Ohio High School Athletic Association for 2014-2015.
•Approved second reading of NEOLA policies.
Superintendent’s Report:
Updated the Board on the following:
•Current electric contract expires August/September. We will be locking in rates in the near future.
•Continental High School has been named a Bronze medal recipient, meaning the high school ranks in the top 13%-27% nationally by US News & World Report.
•Outdoor light installation will begin Thursday. Completion this month nets us a $4700 rebate.
The Board:
•Approved the 2013-2014 junior high/high school student handbook.
•Entered into an “exchange of services partnership agreement” with The Ohio State University at Lima for school year 2014-2015 teacher-training field experiences.
•Heard the transportation and Vantage Career Center reports.
•Approved the following certified teaching contracts as follows:
One-Year Renewal: Jaime Armey, Sara Thomsen, Kyle Tietje
Two-Year: Krystal Bowers, CarrieJo Fitzwater, Amanda Hoover, Jennifer Hopps, Kyle Knapke, Jordan Streicher

•Approved the following supplemental contracts, pending proper certification and satisfactory FBI/BCI background check, if applicable, for the 2014-2015 school year: Jaaci Carr, Yearbook; Jennifer Hopps/Mindi Bradford, Co Jr/Sr Class Advisors; CarrieJo Fitzwater/Jaime Armey, Co-Prom Advisors; Jill Krutsch, Fall Play Director; Chelsea Manon, Assistant Fall Play Director; Kyle Knapke, Spring Musical Director; Tammy Baker, HS Student Council; Hannah Davis, JH Student Council; Jordan Streicher, Quiz Bowl; Cliff Koenig, JH Quiz Bowl; Christian Hoeffel, Varsity Girls Basketball; Jaime Armey, JV Girls Basketball; and Jaaci Carr, National Honor Society.
•Issued a one-year limited contract to Nicole Baringer as a Spanish teacher at Step 0B, pending proper certification and satisfactory FBI/BCI background checks, effective August 18, 2014.
•Approved a one-year contract extension (August 1, 2014 thru July 31, 2015) to Elementary Principal Brian Gerdeman with annual rate of compensation set at $66,900. This will align his contract with the other administrative contracts.
•Approved summer hours for 12-month employees:
Administrative Office: Monday-Thursday, 7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; Friday, 8:00am – 12:00 noon
Custodial Staff: Monday-Thursday, 6:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; Friday, 6:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
The meeting adjourned at 8:22 p.m. The next regular board meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 17th at 7:00 p.m. in the administrative office.
