Putnam County League Player of the Year Honors Night was held between the Reserve and Varsity games of the Continental vs Leipsic boys basketball match-up on Saturday, January 6, 2020. Basketball, Golf, and Track & Field recipients were recognized. Each POY was honored with their list of athletic accomplishments and received a copy of Dan Kern’s Putnam County League book. A special thank you to Dan for all the effort compiling the many years of sports stats for Putnam County. The following is a portion of each of the Honorees many accomplishments:
Mike Schmidt – Class of 1971:
– Ranks #1 in PCL with 51 points in a game
– 1971: 1st Team All-PCL, PCL Player of the Year, 2nd Team All-Ohio
– 733 career points
Greg Spitnale – Class of 1974:
– Ranks #1 with 265 field goals in a season
– 1974: 1st Team All-PCL, PCL Player of the Year, 1st Team District 8 and Player of the Year, 1st Team Northwestern Ohio and Player of the Year, 2nd Team All-Ohio
– 1479 career points, 600 rebounds, Pirate record 75-19
Deb (Wasserman) Alesch – Class of 1981:
– First Female Continental Player to score 1000 points
– 1980 PCL Player of the Year, 1st Team All-PCL
– 1981 1st Team All-PCL and 1st Team District 8
– 1146 career points
Char (Smith) Johnson – Class of 1984:
– Ranks #1 with 666 field goals in a season
– Ranks #2 in the county with 1724 career points
– 1st Team All-PCL (3 yrs), PCL Player of the Year, 1st Team District 8 (2 yrs), Player of the Year, 1st Team Northwestern Ohio, 1st Team All-Ohio by the Associated Press, Ohio/Indiana All-Star game.
– Went on to earn 12 Varsity letters at Ohio Northern in volleyball, basketball and track.
Kyle Martin – Class of 1998:
– 1988 1st Team All-PCL, PCL Player of the Year, 1st Team District 8, 3rd Team Northwestern Ohio
– Career stats: 723 points, over 200 rebounds, 100 steals, 125 assists
Kurtis Brown – Class of 2005:
– Ranks #1 with 33 consecutive free throws
– 1st Team All-PCL (2 yrs), PCL Player of the Year, 1st Team District 8, Player of the Year, 1st Team Northwestern Ohio, Player of the Year, 1st Team All Ohio
– 2005 Ohio’s Player of the Year
– Career stats: 1132 points, 484 assists, 213 steals
Paige Ordway (Class of 2014):
– Ranks #4 with 44 points in a game
– 1st Team All-PCL (2 yrs), PCL Player of the Year, 1st Team District 8, 1st Team Northwestern Ohio, Special Mention All-Ohio
Kyle Weisenburger – Class of 1998:
– two time medalist of the PCL Golf Championship (1997 – 1998)
– 2nd Team PCL in 1995 and First Team in 1996
Kip Manfield – Class of 1979:
– Kip won 14 events at the PCL Track Meets during his high school career, 1976 – 1979
– his events were 200 M Dash, 400 M Dash, Long Jump, 100 Y Dash (1978) and 110 H Hurdles (1979)
