David Gerard “Bud” Dobbelaere, 1951 – 2026

March 22, 2026 by Adam Donaldson

OAKWOOD – David Gerard “Bud” Dobbelaere, 74, of Oakwood, died on March 20, 2026, at home with his wife and son by his side. He was born November 17, 1951, in Paulding to Gerard and Elvene (Keck) Dobbelaere.

David proudly served his country in the United States Army. He later worked for many years at General Motors, Defiance, where he retired. Outside of his work, David remained a lifelong farmer, a way of life that reflected his deep roots in northwest Ohio and his appreciation for hard work and the land.

David loved the outdoors and found great joy in fishing, hunting and boating. He also loved to travel and especially enjoyed spending time at the family cabin in northern Michigan. Some of his happiest moments were spent there relaxing, enjoying nature, and sharing time with family. He also cherished time with his loyal dog, Gus.

Those who knew David will remember him as a generous and genuine man who was always known for his ornery smile.

David is survived by his wife: Kristine Kay (Kohart) Dobbelaere of Oakwood; his son: Cory David Dobbelaere; his sister: Sue (Bob) Brown; father-in-law: Frank Kohart; brothers-in-law: Ken and Denise (Arend) Kohart and Jerry Scharf; sister-in-law: Jan (Daegar) Kohart; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Heidi Ann Dobbelaere; his parents, Gerard and Elvene (Keck) Dobbelaere; a brother-in-law, Van Kohart; and a sister-in-law, Charlene (Kohart) Scharf.

A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Continental and the Funeral Mass beginning at 11:30 a.m. with Father Phil Smith officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date. A luncheon will immediately follow at Oakwood Community Church, Oakwood.

Memorial donations may be made to CHP Hospice or Paulding County Hospital Foundation.

David will be remembered for his kindness, his quiet strength, and the lasting impact he made on the lives of those who knew and loved him.
