December Board Of Education Meeting Recap

The regular monthly meeting for the Continental School Board was held at 6:15 p.m. on December 16, 2014 in the administrative office. President Dean Bidlack called the meeting to order. ​

Mr. Brian Gerdeman, Elementary Principal, reported:
•The K-3 elementary music program will be held Thursday, December 18th at 1:30 and 7:00 p.m. in the Irene Wahl Casteel Memorial Auditorium at Continental High School.
•Elementary students raised $1,031.53 for Christmas for Kids, sponsored by WDFM Mix 98.1 FM.
•Over 1900 items were donated for the food drive, sponsored by the elementary student council. These items were delivered to the food pantries in Continental and Dupont.

Mr. Tim Eding, JH/HS Dean of Students, reported:
•Midterm reports were sent home last week for all students currently earning D’s or F’s in classes.
•Junior high and high school students donated more than 2000 items to the local food pantries in Continental and Dupont. All of these items were delivered to the food banks yesterday (Monday).
•Christmas break begins on December 22nd and will continue through January 2nd. Classes will resume on January 5.
•Semester exams are scheduled for January 15-16.

Athletic Updates:
•Basketball season has started. Some start times have been adjusted for the high school girls basketball due to the fact that we are playing a limited JV schedule (2 quarters/night). Up-to-date schedules are posted on the school website.

Treasurer’s Report:
​•Approved a return of advance from the Cafeteria Fund to the General Fund for $4,357.48.
​•Approved payment of janitor salaries from the Athletic Fund for Saturday basketball games.
•Established compensation for board members at $100 per local meeting, not to exceed 14 meetings, plus $100 for one county meeting per year.
•Appointed Robin Etter as President Pro Tem for the January organizational meeting.
•Approved a $36.00 drama booster donation.
•Accepted the amounts and rates as determined by the Budget Commission, authorizing the necessary tax levies and certifying them to the County Auditor for the 2014 duplicate for the Bond Retirement Fund (2.00 mills).
•Approved OSBA annual membership and electronic subscriptions to Briefcase and School Management News.
•Approved new sub rate of $8.10 for cafeteria workers and aides, effective January 1, 2015 due to State of Ohio Minimum Wage increase.
•Entered into an agreement with North Point Educational Service Center for special education services at Flat Rock Education Center for the 2014-2015 school year at an estimated cost of $31,000 for the year.

Superintendent’s Report:
Mr. Mengerink gave the transportation report.
​
The Board:
​•Authorized Technicon Design Group to advertise and receive bids on behalf of Continental Local School for the construction of a new bus garage.
•Heard the Vantage Career Center report from board member Ron Bradford.
​•Adopted the 2015-2016 school calendar. Opening day for students is August 25; last day is May 25.
​•Approved the third and final reading of NEOLA policies.
​•Approved a half-day, dock-in-pay day to Kelly Brown.

The meeting adjourned at 6:45 p.m. The 2015 organizational board meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 13th at 7:30pm in the administrative office with the regular January board meeting following.
