“OUTSTANDING SENIOR VOLUNTEER AWARDS: Medical Mutual continues its tradition of community involvement by recognizing senior citizens who volunteer their time to help others. These awards salute volunteers who act in a selfless, caring manner and are committed to enhancing the quality of the lives of those around them.”
Continental resident Don Smith was invited to attend Medical Mutual’s 2014 Outstanding Senior Volunteer Awards Luncheon in Toledo on April 23, 2014. Diabetes Youth Services had nominated Don for this honor for his outstanding commitment to DYS. 2014 was Don’s 11th year of swimming laps on his birthday in February to raise funds designated for the Hot Shot Summer Camps. These camps combine camping activities and diabetes education and with Don’s commitment, scholarships are provided and no child is turned away. Don’s goal for 2014 was $25,000 and that goal was surpassed as donations are currently at $27,190. Since 2004, Don’s DYS swim has raised a total of $126,012.00.
Fifteen people from northwest Ohio were recognized at the banquet for their volunteer services. As the names were read off for Honorable Mention, Bronze, and Silver, Don was one of the two finalist. Don’s name was called for the Gold Award and Kay Stenzel, a 4-H leader for 40+ years, was the Platinum winner. Jerry Anderson of WTOL was the Master of Ceremonies and D. Michael Collins, Mayor of Toledo, was the featured speaker. Congratulations Don!
