It seems that Larry & I spend a lot of our vacation time in public schools – most overnight stops on the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure are at high schools in Ohio. This year we spent the week of June 26 – July 1 at the Kentucky Music Week 2016 held at the Bardstown Elementary/Middle School. Now that we have more time (kids are grown), we are musical wannabes, and KMW is just the place to take weeklong classes from some of the country’s best teachers.
Day 1, Sunday: Bardstown smells wonderful! Larry says its hops – we were later told its the smell of sour mash from the bourbon distilleries at the edge of town. Can someone build a distillery at the edge of Continental??!!
Day 2, Monday: Classes start at 8:45. I signed up for two dulcimer classes, a fiddle class (because we have one), vocal class, and dance. Larry is taking stained glass making, fiddle, and dance. Lunch break from 12:30 – 2pm. Classes are done at 5pm and we went to the Instructor’s Concert in the evening at a beautiful local church – such talent!
Day 3, Tuesday: Dulcimer classes are going good – learning a lot. Fiddle class – I have a lot to learn as my fiddle squeals a lot. Thought the vocal class was a group sing but that wasn’t the class I signed up for. Had to stand up in front of the other 7 people and sing a solo with no accompaniment and then get critiqued by the teacher – first time I have EVER sang a solo! In dance class we now know what promenade and dosey-doe are – lots of fun and quite a workout. We skipped the jams that are at all the local hotels and went to a movie for the evening – The State of Jones – a civil war movie.
Will share more later!
