A regal atmosphere filled the Cove Friday night as the Pirates hosted Ottoville in a Putnam County League Homecoming battle. Between the Varsity and Junior Varsity game Queen Kayla Troyer and King Sam Bowers were crowned.
The Continental American Legions served as Color Guard for the National Anthem sang by Paige Lawhorn.
During the Varsity Halftime the Continental High School Leadership team presented the Wounded Warrior Project with a check for $1767 from proceeds from the Fall Volleyball Tournament ($1267) and a $500 contribution from the American Legion Post 451.
And then there was a game. A great game at that.
Wade Stauffer opened up the game scoring with a pair of free throws then Ottoville responded with a 3 pointer. At one point the Big Green opened up a 5 point lead 13-8 but saw the Pirates score the last 4 points of the quarter for a Big Green 13-12 advantage after one. The Pirates scored first in the second to take a 14-13 lead early in the second. Even scoring the rest of the half had the game tied at 26 at the half time break. Ottoville came out the half break to score the first 6 points to take their largest lead of the game 32-26. The Pirates bettered that by having an 8 point run to make it 34-32 Pirates midway through the third period. Ottoville regrouped and outscored the Pirates by 3 in the remaining portion of the third for a 39-38 lead after three. Caleb Olds started the fourth with a 3 pointer followed by a pair of made free throws. Trevor Williamson then made a basket as the Pirates took a 6 point lead 45-39. As Ottovilled struggled from the line (2-6 in the fourth) the Pirates continued to score as the Pirates opened up a 9 point lead 50-41. Ottoville outscored the Pirates 9-6 in the waning minutes of the game but the Pirates prevailed 56-50.
Wade Stauffer lead the Pirates with 22 points (one 3 pointer) while Trevor Williamson had 19 (two 3 pointers). Caleb Olds finished with 9 while Jacob Williams, Dean Krindl, and Chris Potts each had 2 points.
The Pirates are now 5-11 (3-2 PCL) while Ottovilles falls to 3-15 (2-4 PCL). The Pirates are next at Kalida on Friday for a key PCL matchup.
