Taryn Homier, a Senior Girl Scout in Oakwood Troop 20529, spent her summer working on her Gold Award project. The Gold Award is the highest award a girl scout can earn. For her Gold Award, she planted a garden at The Dupont Church of the Brethren and then donated the crops to area food banks. She chose this project because there is currently a hunger crisis occurring in the Untied States and Homier waned to have an impact on the hunger crisis affecting surrounding communities. In addition, Homier hoped to promote the benefits of growing a vegetable garden to produce your own food and promote healthy eating habits. Also, so more people could see the benefit of growing their own food and eating healthier by having fresh vegetables available. The project was called Growing For Others. Homier grew sweet corn, zucchini, cucumbers, green beans, peas, onions, lettuce, radishes, carrots, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, and peppers. Homier donated the produce to help community food banks in Putnam, Paulding, and Defiance counties. These local food banks include: In Putnam County; Dupont Church of the Brethren Food Pantry and Putnam County Community Thrift Store Food Pantry; In Paulding County; Grover Hill Food Pantry, Caring & Sharing Food Pantry, Inc., and Mandale Church of God Food Pantry; In Defiance County; Catholic Community Food Pantry and Hebron Ministries. Homier would like to encourage others to grow more in their gardens next year and to give the extra food to area food banks to help make a difference in their local community.
