The regular monthly meeting for the Continental School Board was held at 7:00 p.m. on March 18, 2014 in the administrative office. President Dean Bidlack called the meeting to order.
Mr. Brian Gerdeman, Elementary Principal, reported:
•Continental Elementary raised $3,170 at the Scholastic Book Fair. Thank you to everyone that purchased items from the Book Fair. Money raised will be used to purchase books for the library and the classrooms.
•April 10th will be the elementary spring music program for grades K-3. It will be held at 1:30 and 7:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
•Ohio Achievement Assessment dates for grades 3-6 will be Wednesday, April 30th, Friday, May 2nd, and Tuesday, May 6th.
•Kindergarten Screening will be held on Friday, April 11th.
•Friday, March 21st will be the end of the third nine weeks. Grade cards will go home on March 28th.
Mr. Tim Eding, JH/HS Dean of Students, reported:
•Congratulations to the students that participated in the Putnam County Fine Arts Festival as well as Mr. Kyle Knapke and Mrs. Jennifer Hopps for helping to organize the event. County Band Participants: Val Geren, Vern Prowant, Andi Krendl, Noah Emmons, and Brian Thacker. County Choir Participants: Gabbi Ridgeway, Bridgette Shelton, Madison Mansfield, and Gabe Recker. Students with artwork on display: Jasmine Pancake (received a “Best of Show” ribbon), Dru Troyer, Brooke Adkins, Bianka Robach, Ross Etter, Briana Sarka, Chase Alvarado, Eric Rhees, Brandi Bowersox, Parker Wildermuth, Hannah Troyer, Andrea Snow, Sydney Eickholt, Jessica Miller, Alicia Dawson, Katie Rankin, Emma Recker, Bridgette Shelton, Whitney Miller, Sloane Zachrich, Emily Bowers, and Emily Brenneman.
•Ohio Graduation Testing is almost complete. Mrs. Debara McIntyre will be administering makeup tests on Wednesday for students that were absent.
•24 juniors took the ACT today. Thank you to the Continental United Methodist Church for allowing us to use their fellowship hall to administer the test.
•The third quarter will end on Friday, March 21st. Grade cards will be available online by the middle of next week.
•The quiz bowl team will be participating in the Putnam County Scholastic League Tournament on Thursday at the ESC in Ottawa.
Athletic Update:
•Congratulations to the basketball teams, cheerleading squads, and coaches for a successful winter sports season. Thank you to all ticket takers, clock operators, scorekeepers, announcers, concession workers, custodians, bus drivers, and everyone else that makes the winter sports season possible.
•Winter sports awards were presented March 17th.
•The spring sports seasons are scheduled to start March 29th.
•Currently, there are six students who will be participating in dual sports.
Treasurer’s Report:
The Board:
•Approved an advance of $769.85 from the General Fund (001) to the Cafeteria Fund (006).
•Approved a preliminary agreement with the Putnam County Educational Service Center for special education services for FY 2015.
•Approved the following appropriation changes:
Increase Fund 572 (Title I) $1,219.34
Increase Fund 590 (Title II-A) $ 15.84
Increase Fund 516 (Title VI-B) $5,548.10
•Approved the following donations:
$100.00 from Pam Jones to the Drama Department
$ 4.00 from an anonymous donor to the Art Fund
$149.00 from the farmers breakfast donation to the FFA Fund
$75.00 from Drama Boosters to the Drama Department
Superintendent’s Report:
Updated the Board on the following:
•Possible new bus garage
•Straight A Grant – We will have two applications
•Outdoor lighting project starting soon
The Board:
•The high school musical “Once Upon A Mattress” will have a matinee performance on Thursday, April 3rd. Evening performances will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 4th and April 5th at 7:30 p.m. in the Irene Wahl Casteel Auditorium. The show is directed by Mr. Kyle Knapke and Mrs. Chelsea Manon. Madison Mansfield and Matt Bracken serve as student directors and Mrs. Pam Jones is the accompanist.
•Heard the transportation and Vantage Career Center reports.
•Approved the revised 2013-2014 school calendar and revised contingency plan.
•Approved FFA students to attend FFA Convention in Columbus, Ohio on May 1-3, 2014.
•Accepted resignations from:
-Tracy Potts, Jacquelyn Beckner and Becky Schnipke as Co-Middle School Cheerleading Advisors
-Becky Schnipke as Middle School Volleyball Coach
-Jaaci Carr as Varsity Girls Basketball Coach
•Approved Leva Weller and Allison Streicher as softball volunteers.
•Issued Mary McClure a one-year limited contract as a full-time bus driver, pending completion of bus driver certification requirements.
•Approved the Memorandum of Understanding between the Continental Local School District Board of Education and the Continental Education Association, effective July 1, 2014, regarding changing the after-school program from a year long position to one offered each of the three seasons; August, October, and March.
•Approved the revised 2013-2014 school calendar and revised contingency plan. Makeup days will be held on April 17, May 27-30. Currently, our last day for students will be May 30. There will no longer be an early dismissal on April 2nd.
