On Thursday Continental hosted Ottoville in a Putnam County League Girls Soccer game between two teams that held title aspirations. The action started out quick as the Pirates took the first attempt at a goal that was quickly followed by a Big Green goal 50 seconds into the game. Big Green 1, Pirates 0. Less than a minute later (at the 38:24 mark) the Pirates hit the back of the goal as Maddie Burke scored on a pass from Alex Hoeffel. The Pirates made it 2-1 with 9:03 left in the half when Alex Hoeffel dribbled by three defenders to put in a shot from the 18. Pirate 2, Big Green 1 at Half.
The second half saw the Big Green put in the equalizer at the 28:51 mark when they put in a shot from the 20 off a throw in. At the 16:05 mark Pirate Riley Fenter just missed a goal as she put a shot from the 15 off the crossbar. At the 14:00 mark the Big Green had a shot from close ran played out by the Pirate defense. The game took a turn when a Pirate was red carded at the 12:24 mark leaving the Pirates to finish the game 1 person down. In the remaining time both teams had clear goal chances but were unable to convert. Pirates 2, Big Green 2 final.
Continental out shot the Big Green 21-17. Pirate Goalie Angel Brzozowski had 8 saves.
The tie eliminates the Big Green from the PCL title chase as they move to 9-2-2 (2-1-1 PCL). The Pirates are now 6-7-1 (2-0-1 PCL) and will take on Kalida Tuesday for the PCL crown. Any decision other than a Pirate victory will mean that Kalida will be sole holder of the PCL crown.
It was Senior night for the Pirates as the lone Senior on the Team, Kaitlyn Alvarado, was recognized. Congratulations Kaitlyn on your Continental soccer career. The game was also broadcast on Zsportslive where Kaitlyn was selected as one of the Players of the game.
