How We Started: In January 2016, a group met to discuss the possibility and need for a supplemental food program for Continental Elementary students. Following this meeting, the group met with some of the people who run the supplemental food program in Ottawa. They told us how they distribute their food, how often they distribute, the cost of their program, where they get the food, the number of students served, and how they finance their program. Again, the Continental group met and two more people joined. They discussed what they thought would work for the Continental program. A name was chosen for the program, a sponsor was picked to get us started, a time frame for start-up was set, and sign-up letters were sent to students. A February deadline was set and prices of food were found. Meetings continue almost weekly to get us ready for our April implementation date. We plan to distribute food to students in April and May, evaluate and fundraise over the summer, and continue the program in September.
The Goal: Is to provide Continental Elementary students, K-6 with the additional food they need to get the most of their education.
