
Everything was going right for Continental High Baseball team on Tuesday as they had Ace pitcher Sam Newsome on the mound and a hitting attitude but just could not string the hits together to defeat Delphos St Johns in OHSAA Division IV Patrick Henry District action at Delphos. The #12 seed Pirates out hit the #5 seed Blue Jays 9-6 while Newsome, amoung the area strikeout leaders, struck out 7 Blue Jays but one inning made the difference in this game. After 2 scoreless inning the Pirates crossed the plate first with a run in the top of the third. The Blue Jays followed that up by scoring 4 in their half on the third. Pilots 4-1. The next two innings saw the Blue Jays expand their lead by 3. Blue Jays 7-1. The Pirates were determined to make it their game as the put one on the board in the top of the sixth only to have the Blue Jays match it. Blue Jays 8-2 after 6. The Pirates rallied to score a run in the seventh but it was not enough. Blue Jays 8-3 final.
Jayden Pitney led the Pirates hitting by being a Home Run short of the cycle hitting a single, double and triple. Quinn Tegenkamp added a double and Ethan Sullivan drove in a pair of runs. Overall the Pirates had 9 hits and committed 1 error while the Blue Jays had 6 hits and also committed 1 error.
Sam Newsome took the loss for the Pirates giving up 8 runs (5 earned) on 6 hits, 7 strikeouts and 5 walks. Newsome is a Senior and will be attending UNOH and will be on the Racers’ baseball team.
Continental ends their season at 1-14. Delphos St Johns advances to take on #3 seed Ayersville on Thursday in the Sectional Finals.
