From the Continental Pirates Baseball Facebook page 5/8/16:
Yesterday, the Pirates bowed out in Sectional tournament to the Arlington Red Devils, but not before they battled the #1 seed to the final out, 9-3. That score does not indicate how the game played out. Arlington has beaten most of their opponents by 10+ runs, and their coaches mentioned how well our team played after the game.
Continental scored first to go up, 1-0, but unfortunately the team left the bases loaded. The Pirates would repeat that common theme throughout the game. Although Continental compiled 10 hits, 6 walks, and 1 hit batter, 13 runners were stranded on base.
The team made some errors, and it was not a perfectly-played game. But, Fred Shepard, in particular, was very competitive on the mound and at bat. Fred held the Pirates in the contest by pitching a complete game… while at the plate, he was a perfect 2-for-2 with 2 walks and an RBI.
Eight of the Pirates’ 9 lineup places reached base in this one.
Terry Dockery III went 2-for-5 with 2 stolen bases and 2 runs scored as the leadoff batter.
Dylan Coleman had a second straight strong game- 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk.
Saige Deleon went 2-for-4 with an RBI to extend his team lead.
Trevor Williamson was 0-for-1, but he was walked twice and was hit by a pitch while making numerous plays on grounders to his shortstop position. Trevor’s first walk came with the bases loaded in the 1st inning.
Jacob Williams was 1-for-4 and Jarret Keck finished 2-for-4 to account for the other Continental hits.
Despite the loss, I hope all the players feel proud of their competitive effort.
Coming up, we have an away game at Holgate tomorrow/Monday and at McComb on Tuesday. Senior night is at home vs. Ottoville on Thursday.
