If you went to the regular season game between Continental and Riverdale Boys Soccer teams you might have expected a shootout with the Falcons taking the earlier game 4-2. But shots were a premium on Wednesday night when the two met up at Riverdale for a OHSAA Division III Boys Soccer Regional Semifinal.
It seemed ironic that neither of the goals scored were directed by someone’s first. The Falcons hit the back of the net first when they executed a corner kick to perfection placing the ball in the near third of the field where they headed the ball into the goal with 25:21 left in the half. The Falcons would convert another header when a high crossing pass from the right side bound into the center where they headed the ball in. Falcons 2-0 with 4:45 left in the first half.
The Pirates had a great attempt to cut the Falcons lead to 1 with 58 seconds to go when a free kick from the 25 just missed. That would be the story for the Pirates the rest of the game. Falcons 2, Pirates 0 at half.
The second half went very quickly with the Pirates having 3 opportunities for free kicks outside the penalty area that could not find the back of the net. Falcons 2, Pirates 0.
Continental falls to 15-5 ending their season with a District Championship and a couple of school records. Riverdale improves to 16-2-2 and played at Ottawa Hills on Saturday for a State Semifinal berth.
The Senior Class will have lots of memories to share about Continental’s first District Championship. Congratulations and good luck in your future endeavors Seniors Westin Okuley, Aidan Earles, Dominique Hammond, Reed Warnement, Noah Bibler, and Bryce Recker.
