Friday night some in the crowd questioned whether former Holgate coach Paul Wayne was back coaching as the host Fairview Apaches applied a very methodical offense and stiff defense against the Continental Pirates. It worked for three quarters. A strong fourth quarter by the Pirates made the difference in this low scoring affair.
The game started out with the Apaches opening the scoring with a basket which was matched by a Pirate 2 pointer by Tyler Brecht. The Apaches then scored 8 of the next 9 points to take a 6 point 9-3 lead. A basket by Trevor Williamson made it 9-5 before the teams traded baskets (Dean Krendl hit for the Pirates) to end the quarter 11-7 Apaches. The Pirates scored the first four points of the second quarter with baskets by Jacob Williams and Brecht to make it 11-11. The rest of the quarter belonged to Fairview as they put in the last 5 points to make it 16-11 Apaches at half.
The third quarter had the Pirate Wade Stauffer score the first 2. It was followed by a Williamson 3 to make it a tied game 16 all. A pair of baskets by the Apaches opened up a 4 point Fairview lead 20-16. Another Stauffer 2 followed by a Caleb Olds 3 point play allowed the Pirates to take their first lead of the game 21-20. The Apaches scored the final point of the quarter making it 21 all heading into the fourth quarter.
The Pirates opened up the fourth by scoring the first 6 points on a Brecht basket, a Chris Potts 3 and a Williams free throw to make it 27- 21 Pirates. The Pirates and Apaches traded a pair of baskets each making it 31-26 before an Apache 3 would make it a one possession game 31-28. Williamson went 4-4 from the free throw line for the Pirates to finish up the nights scoring. Pirates 35, Apaches 28 final.
Trevor Williamson lead the Pirates with13 points, Tyler Brecht put in 6. Wade Stauffer and Jacob Williams had 4 each. Caleb Olds and Chris Potts both had 3 while Dean Krendl finished with 2.
Continental is now 4-1 and will play at Antwerp on Saturday night. Fairview falls to 1-3.
