The early talk might have been about US Representative Bob Latta and Ohio American Legion Commander Jason Rue on the speaking agenda for the annual Continental Local Schools Veterans Day program but it was the Elementary School taking over the Pledge of Allegiance is what people should be talking about. The program started with a prayer by American Legion Post 541 Chaplain Ed Bidlack. Senior Class President Avery Noffsinger started the Pledge of Allegiance but it was the Elementary student who took it from there with a loud and proud speedy finish that left all in the crowd in amazement.
The High School band then played the Star Spangled Banner. After a quick welcome to all veterans by Superintendent Kissell, the band played Salute to America and the Choir sang United States Armed Forces Salute (where each service member was to stand when they service song was sang). The Kinderstart class sang See The Veteran followed by the Student Elementary Student Council shared information about honoring Veterans.
Ed Bidlack then introduced US Representative Bob Latta. Representative Latta opened by giving a history of the start of the Revolutionary War at Lexington and to the War finish at Yorktown and how those serviceman set the standard for fighting for freedom. Representative Latta closed by reminding us to thank both active service personnel and veteran with a simple “Thank You” for all they have done to protect our freedoms.
Next on the Agenda was Ohio American Legion Commander, Member of Post 541, and Continental High graduate Jason Rue. Commander Rue questioned the students about Military Holiday and what they mean. Most knew about Veterans day honoring those who served and Memorial Day for those who gave all but most were not aware of Armed Forces day which honors those who are in active service. Commander Rue urged the crowd to say “Thank You” not only to the Veterans and active service personnel but also to the spouses of those who are in active service.
Post 541 led by Sargent of Arms Jack Etter then did a 21 gun salute in honor of Veterans Day. CHS student Evan Strickler played Taps. Closing the program was a Veterans Day Video produced by Chase Hatch, Colton Hiltner, Mallorie Barnhart, Grant Clementz, Dax Warner, Copper Wollam, and Camren Burgei. The video started with a history of the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, a history of the Tomb and the guarding of the tomb. The video closed with a long picture tribute of a number of those from Continental who have served. It was great to see a large crowd to honor over 20 Veterans in attendance. In closing we thank all Veterans for all their service, those in active service for stepping up, and those service wives for their support.
