Vantage Board Hears from National SkillsUSA Winners

The Vantage Board of Education held their regular September board meeting on Thursday, September 4, 2014 in the District Conference room. The minutes from the August 7, 2014 regular board meeting were approved along with financial statements for the month of July, 2014. The Board approved the FY15 final appropriations and revenues, participation in in the Better Business Bureau of Central Ohio Inc. Group Retrospective Rating Agreement of Participation and Consent Program, and a transfer of $1200 into the GOALS account.

The Board heard from special guests, 2014 Carpentry graduates Ben Schnipke, from Ottoville and Austen Stukey from Parkway, and their Carpentry teacher, Jerry Robinson. Ben placed 2nd in the SkillsUSA National Cabinetmaking competition and Austen placed 5th at Nationals in the Carpentry contest this summer in Kansas City.

Superintendent Staci Kaufman shared with the Board that she will be co-presenting for several area K-12 superintendents at the Northwest Ohio Superintendents Association conference on Sept. 16. Apollo, Pioneer, and Vantage superintendents will present current CTE issues impacting K-12 associate districts, including the new Middle school CTE state mandate, CTE report cards and technical skill attainment testing.

Adult Education Director Pete Prichard brought the Board up to date on the latest class schedules, state funding issues, Northwest State Community College enrollment procedures, the Ohio Lean Consortium, and the Adult Education Institution Assessment and Continuous Improvement Tool that will be used for strategic planning. High School Director Ben Winans shared information with the Board about Kenny King, 2014 welding graduate who earned his way to a 5-year apprenticeship program with the Local 776 Plumbers and Pipefitters union. He discussed the smooth start to the school year, professional development for staff, upcoming events and activities and planning for the fall OGT’s, the Manufacturing Open House, and 8th grade tours.

In new business, the Board:
– Approved the following Supplemental Contracts: Tillman Karl,Theresa Mengerink, Laura Stocksdale, Katie Drerup, Kelly Horstman, Ashley Cline, Angie Shellabarger; all Virtual Learning graders; Penny Baucom, Special Event Worker;
– Employed the following list, as Adult Education instructors, as needed, as scheduled: Annette Klinger, Tanya Bunch, Lynn Schweitzer, Mary Jane Fast, Brent Wright, Gary Cearns, Craig Black, Troy White, all Adult Ed instructors; Jackie Brandt, Public Safety Programs Coordinator, Jackie Brandt, Police Academy Assistant, Virginia Hammons and Gary Dilworth, Police Academy Assistants; Pamela Weippert, ABLE Instructor;
– Rescind the resolution to recognize school nurse designees for 2014-2015 school year. (Reesa Rohrs and Leigh Carey, Health Technologies Instructors) and replace with Resolution to recognize school nurse designees to act in an emergency for 2014-2015 school year. (Reesa Rohrs and Leigh Carey, Health Technologies Instructors);
– Resolution to approve the amended Van Wert Satellite Agreement for 2014-15 school year;
– Resolution to approve the list of bus and van drivers for Vantage Career Center 2014-15 school year;
– Resolution to dedicate Board resources as a participating “Pilot” district in the Munis Program in calendar year 2015 or 2016, and authorizes the treasurer to complete the necessary application for participation as a Pilot district in the Munis Program as offered by OASBO and MCOECN;
– Resolution to approve the CRA Tax Abatement from Tin Cap Investments, LLC, Van Wert, Ohio for a 10 year, 100% tax abatement to renovate a building at 109 S. Washington St., Van Wert at a cost of $50,000. The renovation will create two upstairs luxury apartment rentals and one down stairs commercial space;
– Approve the Memorandum of Understanding between Vantage Teachers Organization and Vantage Career Center to approve credentialed satellite evaluators;
– Resolution to approve the additional Ohio Teacher Evaluation System (OTES) certified evaluators, effective July 1, 2014 – July 30, 2015: Dave Froelich, Van Wert Satellite Administrator, Bill Clifton, Van Wert Satellite Administrator, Todd Harmon, Paulding Satellite Administrator.

The next regular Board meeting will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the District Conference Room.
