Vantage Board of Education Held Their July Meeting

July 1, 2024 by Adam Donaldson

The Vantage Board of Education held their July Board meeting on Thursday, June 27, 2024 in the
District Conference Room. During the board meeting, Minutes from the June 6, 2024 regular board
meeting were approved along with financial statements for the month of May, 2024.
Superintendent Rick Turner welcomed the following guests to the meeting: Sam Shriver with The
Times Bulletin, Scott Truxell with The VW Independent, Mr. Benjamin Winans, High School Director, and
Mrs. Angie Fahy, Adult Education Director.

Mr. Turner also spoke about and highlighted the following items at the meeting:
➢ Projects around campus will be in full swing over the next several weeks. The approval to solicit
bids for our truck driving lot expansion and illumination are on this agenda, as is an allotment for
the foundation for the fire training facility. The mill and fill parking lot project will begin the week
of July 8th. The contractor estimates 10 working days to complete the work. We are meeting with
Garmann Miller next week at our newly acquired facilities across the street for a tour and
discussion on renovating the building, both short and long term. We anticipate bringing you a
recommendation for the repurposing of that building at the September Board meeting, shortly
after our staff returns from summer break.
➢ We are looking at our goals and priorities for next year, utilizing our newly updated 5-Year
Strategic Plan to guide us. Our district wide goal for the 2024-2025 school year will be to:
○ Establish dedicated space to provide additional programming options for high school
students and adult students.
We will have an Administrative Retreat in early August to finalize the details of our goals to present
to staff at the pre-service meeting on August 14th.
➢ We are currently seeking an administrative supervisor position and have received four applications
to date. We will continue working to fill this position.
➢ I attended the OACTS Summer Conference last week. The major themes of the conference were
education-business partnerships, emerging technologies in education (AI), and the initial
discussions in preparation for the next biennium budget that will go into effect July 1, 2025.

High School Director Benjamin Winans reported on the following:
➢ Final acceptance letters have been mailed out to roughly 330 new students for the 2024-2025
school year. Our admin team is working through creating the master schedule and plans to have
this completed in the next couple weeks. As we have discussed we are planning for high
enrollment which creates more difficulty in creating the academic schedule. We are confident that
we can create a schedule that will not only meet the academic needs of the larger number of
students, but also work well for our teaching staff.
➢ Over the past month we have had groups of educators from both Paulding and Van Wert County
visit our building as they were engaged in the Economic Development activities which allow them
to visit not only our facilities but also local businesses to gain knowledge that they can share in
their classrooms. It was again a pleasure to have staff members from many of your local schools
come in and see the opportunities we offer here at Vantage. Thanks to both the Paulding and Van
Wert County Economic Development groups for organizing these events.
➢ Speaking of Economic Development – this year we loosely tracked visitors to our building so that
we could examine who we are connecting with and who we are missing. In the coming month I
have meetings scheduled with Paulding, Putnam and Van Wert County Economic Development to
further examine the list of those who visited and have an open conversation with them about how
we can continue to connect local businesses to our students.
➢ We were recently allocated our Federal Perkins Grant funds for the coming year. We did see a
little drop in the funding for this year, but I would expect that once they reallocate the funds later
in the year that we will end up at roughly the same amount as last year which was right around
$180,000. I conducted our Needs Assessment at the local stakeholder meeting back in February
and the group again chose to earmark these funds for use with our special education population,
specifically to provide support through intervention specialists and classroom aides. We will
continue to examine the district data this year as we hope to continue to see growth through the
use of these funds.

Adult Education Director Angie Fahy reported on the following:
➢ Ohio Career Technical Education Equipment Grant Program
○ Reapplying with a focus on the medical programs
■ Application due June 28, 2024
➢ Ohio Board of Nursing
○ Both programs received full approval from the Ohio Board of Nursing at their May 22, 2024
meeting, for a period of five years.
➢ Achademix Training
○ Staff attending training in May. New options being rolled out:
■ Attendance with a QR code that students scan as they enter and leave the
classroom.
● Eliminates the need for the instructor to track and enter attendance
manually.
■ Reporting
● Currently having issues➢ High School Students
○ Held meetings with four potential PNP students and their parents for an opportunity for
them to take classes in the PNP program their senior year, allowing them to enroll after
high school with a lighter class load and still be on track to earn their PNP one year after
graduation.
○ Four Vantage Career Center high school students enrolled and successfully completed the
EMT program while enrolled in high school. One student has passed the registry and the
other three are scheduled to test by the end of June.

In new business, the Board:
➢ Approved two supplemental contracts

➢ Approved the Adult Education School Catalog and Student Handbook

➢ Approved a Business Service Agreement with TSC for the phone system
➢ Accepted three (3) resignations
