The Vantage Board of Education held the February Regular Board meeting on Thursday, February
2, 2023 in the District Conference Room. During the Board meeting, minutes from the January 12, 2023
tax budget, organization and regular Board meeting were approved along with financial statements for
the month of December, 2022.
Superintendent Rick Turner began the meeting welcoming Sam Shriver with The Times Bulletin,
Scott Truxell with The VW Independent, Mr. Benjamin Winans, High School Director, Mrs. Angie Fahy,
Adult Education Director, and Mrs. Miriam Owens, Community Relations Coordinator.
Superintendent Rick Turner informed the board that next week he will travel to Columbus along
with Angie Fahy, Laura Peters and Ben Winans to attend the Annual OhioACTE Legislative conference.
With a new two year state budget beginning in July, funding for education will be a priority in our message
to legislators. The Governor outlined his spending plan in his State of the State address this week. His
budget will have a continuation of the Fair School Funding Plan, and Career centers would see a $300
million one-time funding bump for capital improvements and equipment. He will also continue to make
school safety a top priority, including funding for a School Resource Officer. It is noteworthy that at this
time, the pandemic-era Governors Emergency Education Relief line items and American Rescue Plan Act
support for students who are homeless or have disabilities, among other federal items, also are set to
drop to zero by the end of the biennium. Vantage is currently on the list for a $61,476.00 award through
the Ohio School Safety Grant program.
Mr Turner also reported on the following items:
● The process for career tech teacher licensure and support continues to be a topic of discussion.
The needs of new career tech instructors are different from traditional teachers that have
completed a traditional teacher preparation program at a university. Currently, the University of
Toledo and Bowling Green State University have programs to prepare career tech instructors and
provide them with the required courses to obtain licensure with ODE. These programs differ
greatly in their methodology for preparing instructors. We continue to meet with both universities
and express our needs for our instructors. This topic is also important for legislators to hear and
understand so they can provide the legislation and adequate funding for these teacher training
programs. Vantage will remain active in this process.
● There have been many preparations being made around the building for Sophomore Visitation
Day on Friday. This is an important part of the recruiting process and the staff works very hard to
ensure that the sophomores have a great experience during their visit.
● The students are mudding the drywall at the spec house on Raymond Street. They are picking it
up very quickly and are doing a great job!
● The two (2) classes for the drone training academy have been scheduled for next summer. Our
goal is to become a certified testing center so those that complete the course can test right here at
Vantage, thereby creating a “One Stop Shop” for them.
High School Director Benjamin Winans began his report by recognizing Tonya Temple and Miriam
Owens for their work in promoting our programs to all of the sophomores from our home school districts
during the month of January. The sophomores and their parents will have an opportunity to attend the
information sessions on the evening of February 27th from 5:00-7:30 p.m. during the Open House/Taste
of Vantage event. Mr. Winans also spoke about the upcoming “Mock Interviews” for the seniors in their
English classes as well as their labs. Several business professionals from each field will be joining us on
that day to conduct the thirty minute interviews.
Upcoming events:
February 3, 2023- Sophomore Visit Day
February 20, 2023- President’s Day (School will now be in session for a make-up day)
February 27, 2023- Vantage Open House for interested students and parents
Adult Education Director Angie Fahy updated the board about the Tech Cred program. They are
meeting with several area businesses regarding training to be paid for with Tech Cred. Many are using
Tech Cred for the first time to train their staff. Emergency Medical Technician was recently approved as
part of the Tech Cred program. Mrs. Fahy also reported on the following: The next adult CDL classes will
