Kurtis Brown spent little time on the bench during his four years on the Pirate’s Varsity basketball team. Last year he took a spot on the bench as assistant to Coach Kevin Homier; this year he will move up to the Number One spot as the Boys Varsity Basketball Coach. Brown is a 2005 graduate of CHS and a 2009 graduate of Ohio Northern University. Kevin Homier resigned from the Varsity coaching position last spring saying, “I am happy that Kurtis is excited about doing the job. With his knowledge and his love of basketball, he will do an excellent job”. Coach Homier also added, “I loved every minute of the job and would have loved to do it forever but life changes; the friendships I have built with the boys are some of the treasures of my life.”
Coach Brown has helped Kevin since 2005 with the summer basketball leagues and joined the coaching staff during the 2012-2013 season. Kurtis told the eNews, “We’ve got a young team, with only two lettermen returning. It is an opportunity for the underclassmen to get a lot of experience at the Varsity level.” About his mentor, Coach Homier, Kurtis added, “He had a huge impact on the school and the community – two trips to State and four trips to Regionals. He had the ability to get kids to play at 100% of their potential – he got the best out of every player.”
The Junior Varsity and Varsity Boys play their first game on Friday, November 29 at Paulding at 6pm. The Lady Pirates start their season on November 23 at Lincolnview at 6pm. Go Team!!
