Wildcats Finish Off Lady Pirates To Take PCL Title

February 16, 2019 by Karen Donaldson

A win by host Kalida on Thursday would garner them an undefeated Putnam County League Girls Basketball Championship, a loss to Continental would mean a shared title with Ottoville. It was the visiting Pirates who jumped out to the early lead. The Pirates would put in 6 of the first 10 points of the game for the early lead. The Pirates would expand their lead to 3, 9-6 but would see the Wildcats battle back with an 11-2 run to take a 17-11 lead after 1. Both teams would put 8 points on the board for a 25-19 Wildcat advantage at halftime. The second half was all Wildcat defense as the Pirates would only make one field goal. The third quarter would go the Wildcat way 13 – 5 for a 38-24 Wildcat advantage heading in the final quarter. The Pirates would put a lone free throw on the board while the Wildcats would put in 12 for a Kalida 50, Continental 25 final.

Kerri Prowant led the Pirates with 7 points while Alex Hoeffel and Addyson Armey contributed 6 each. Madelyn Potts had 5 while Katie Keller had 1 point. Hoeffel hit 2 three-pointers while Potts and Prowant put in 1 each.

This ends the regular season portion of the Pirates schedule as they fall to 4-17 (2-5 PCL). The Pirates start the tournament trail with a trip to Paulding on Tuesday at 8 to take on Crestview in a sectional semifinal. Kalida finishes the season 7-0 in the PCL and is 16-6 overall.

This marked the last regular season game for Pirate senior Madi Sharp.
