Anna Mary (Shafer) Etter, 1913 – 2013

DUPONT – Anna Mary (Shafer) Etter, 100, of Dupont died at 4:18 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at The Meadows of Kalida. She was born April 19, 1913 in Paulding County to the late Lloyd A. and Mary Ann (Gillespie) Shafer. On July 29, 1934 she married Howard “Red” Etter who died July 16, 1984.
Anna Mary is survived by 3 children: Jenet Jean (Donald) McKibben, Shirley (John) Mansfield, and Jack (Caroline) Etter all of Continental; a daughter-in-law: Phyllis Etter of Dupont; 14 grandchildren: 48 great-grandchildren: 40 great-great grandchildren; 2 sisters: Edith Sword of Weslaco, TX. and Edna Place of Wabash, IN. She was also preceded in death by her son: Lyle Etter; her daughter and son-in-law: Gloria and Keith Jones; 3 brothers and sisters-in-law: Lloyd (Pauline) Shafer, Lester (Phyllis) Shafer, and Russell (Kes) Shafer; and 2 sisters and brothers-in-law: Marie (Robert) Hoover and Sarah (George) Burkholder and a great-granddaughter: Carrie Chivington Roeth.
Anna Mary and her husband owned and operated “Annette’s Ceramics” for many years. Her most favorite project was picking up hickory nuts and processing them to sell to her 94 yearly customers, which helped support her Missionary granddaughter and family in Africa.
She was a very dedicated member of her church, Dupont Church of the Brethren during her lifetime. She lived a life dedicated to serving the Lord in obedience to Him before her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Anna Mary had worked at General Motors in Defiance, Westinghouse and Lima Tank Depot during WWII. She kept busy knitting and crocheting, but her favorite was quilting and she loved tending her flowers. She enjoyed making flower arrangements, decorating wedding cakes, and family entertaining.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Dupont Church of the Brethren with Rev. Terry Porter officiating. Burial will follow in Monroe Cemetery, Continental. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Continental and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to Dupont Church of the Brethren or to the Gideons.
