A young man contacted the eNews asking about the history of this building. I can dig up some information for him but thought I would let our readers respond. Feel free to share what you remember about this beautiful landmark in our community. Thank you for responding and thank you to Craig for asking!

I always loved eating meals at the Peg Leg with my family, especially my Grandma, Reba Kirk. I have such fond memories of playing the juke box, macaroni salad, iced tea, & quality time with family over delicious food! I wish the restaurant was still up & running so I could take my kids there, reminisce on old memories & make new memories!!

I think it is most likely the most impressive building in Continental. We purchased the old safe that was in there in about 1981-1982 ish. I think it was a bank in the early years of the building. We actually built a room in our old house out in the county around it. There were different sized apartments in the top. Some of the bartenders and waitresses lived up there The one side had been a bar since the 70’s and the other side a pizza place and gun shop for a while. That only goes back 40 years, not sure how old it really is.

This building has been a part of my family for a long time. My aunt and uncle, Jackie & Ed Tracy owned and operated the Peg Leg Bar and Restaurant here for many years I believe beginning in the 1960’s to early 70’s. My sister’s first job was in the kitchen cooking with Aunt Jackie. My uncle was a renowned collector and the restaurant was decorated/filled with his arrowhead collection and other various antiques. The food of course was phenomenal and folks still miss the Peg Leg salad dressing, which is of course a family recipe. The bar changed hands to their son Ned Tracy, who still owns the property. Ned and his wife Terri also own the hardware in town and they would be a great resource for information about the history. But if you want great stories, contact my Aunt Jackie. :)

If my memory serves me correctly, I believe that the building was previously a hotel.

The Putnam co. Historical Museum has a letter from a son of former people who ran the hotel. It describes what it was like inside and about the running of the hotel.
